Overview
C-reactive protein is made by the liver in response to inflammation. The high-sensitivity version, hs-CRP, is calibrated to detect the low-grade inflammation relevant to cardiovascular risk rather than the large spikes that accompany infection.
Its usefulness depends almost entirely on when the sample was taken. A result drawn within a fortnight of a cold, a dental infection, a hard training block or a flare of anything inflammatory is not a baseline — it is a snapshot of that event.

The single most useful rule: never act on one hs-CRP. Two results, taken at least two weeks apart and away from illness, are the minimum.
What it is measuring, and what it is not
CRP rises when inflammatory signaling tells the liver to produce it. Standard CRP is used clinically to detect and track infection and inflammatory disease. hs-CRP is the same molecule measured with a more sensitive assay, able to resolve the small differences within the range that a standard test would report as simply "normal."
That sensitivity is the point, because the inflammation relevant to atherosclerosis operates at levels far below what an infection produces.
What it is not is a diagnosis of anything. It tells you inflammation is present. It says nothing about where or why — and that is its central limitation. A raised hs-CRP is equally consistent with gum disease, an autoimmune condition, visceral fat, a recent virus, poor sleep and a hard week of training.
What raises it besides disease
This is where most confusing results come from.
Recent infection, including one you barely noticed. A cold two weeks ago can still be showing.
Obesity, and visceral fat specifically. Adipose tissue is metabolically active and produces inflammatory signaling. This is one of the most common reasons for a persistently raised hs-CRP in the group we see, and it is also one of the more modifiable.
Intense exercise. A hard session or a heavy training block raises it transiently — which matters if you have an athletic background and trained the day before your draw.
Smoking. Poor sleep, and sleep-disordered breathing. Periodontal disease, which is genuinely underrated as a source of chronic low-grade inflammation. Chronic stress.
Hormone therapy taken orally raises CRP through a liver first-pass effect, without necessarily reflecting increased vascular risk. This is relevant in midlife women and it is a reason route of administration matters — patch versus pill is a real clinical distinction, not a preference.
Autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, which is the situation where a persistently raised result warrants proper evaluation rather than lifestyle advice.
How it fits into risk assessment
hs-CRP adds modestly to cardiovascular risk assessment beyond the standard factors. It is most useful in people whose risk sits in an intermediate band, where it can tip a decision one way or another — and least useful in people whose risk is already clearly high or clearly low, where it rarely changes anything.
It is worth being clear about the strength of the claim. hs-CRP is an adjunct, not a primary risk factor on the level of blood pressure, ApoB, smoking or diabetes. Some guidelines include it as a risk enhancer; none treats it as a target in its own right.
Which is the same shape as homocysteine: a marker that reports on a process rather than a lever to pull.
What moves it
The things that lower hs-CRP are the things that lower cardiovascular risk generally, which is part of why it is hard to say the number itself is doing anything.
Losing visceral fat has the clearest effect. Regular activity lowers baseline inflammation even though individual hard sessions raise it acutely. Stopping smoking, improving sleep, treating sleep-disordered breathing, and dealing with gum disease all contribute. Statin therapy lowers hs-CRP alongside lipids where it is indicated.
There is no useful intervention aimed at the number alone, and the supplements marketed on that basis have thin evidence behind them.
Frequently asked questions
My hs-CRP came back high. Should I be worried? Not on one result. Repeat it at least two weeks later, away from illness and away from a hard training block. Most single raised results settle.
What if it stays high across two tests? Then it is worth looking for a cause — dental health, sleep, visceral fat, an inflammatory or autoimmune condition. A persistently raised result with no obvious explanation warrants proper evaluation rather than being managed as a lifestyle number.
Above 10 mg/L — what does that mean? That is generally outside the range used for cardiovascular risk assessment and suggests an acute inflammatory process. The useful step is finding what it is, then re-testing once it has resolved.
Should I take a supplement to lower it? No. The evidence for supplements aimed at CRP specifically is weak, and lowering the number without addressing what is driving it does not obviously achieve anything.
Does exercise raise or lower it? Both, at different timescales. Regular training lowers baseline; a hard session raises it acutely for days. Do not test the morning after a heavy effort.
Where this fits in your plan
hs-CRP is a reasonable inclusion on a broad panel and a poor standalone test. Its value is in adding context to a risk picture already built from lipids, blood pressure, glucose and history — and in flagging, occasionally, that something inflammatory is going on that nobody had looked for.
Read it on a full panel, never on one draw, and never on the week after you have been unwell.
